You may have read my post about 'My week that was..' In which case you'll know I was pretty determined to get my hands on a Chelsea Flower Show special edition Cupcake from The Hummingbird Bakery, especially having read an article from Vogue with lovely pictures.
As we were on our way out of London on Friday we decided to stop off in Richmond, where the latest Hummingbird Bakery has now opened. It's their sixth bakery, so they're obviously doing quite well.
The first opened on Portobello Road back in 2004.I worked out I've been to 4 out of the 6 Bakeries and I have to say I think the Richmond branch is probably my most favourite. It's large and spacious and when we visited it was pretty quiet. There is plenty of seating, we counted 30+ seats. Much different to the other bakeries where I have found getting a seat quite difficult as they are so limited. Here there was some music playing making the whole experience felt a lot more relaxing.
The relaxing atmosphere is helped by the fact there's a lot more square footage, I'm sure it's the largest. But I guess that's what happens when you move out of a Central London, and into Greater London. I think it's a clever decision. There was a steady stream of customers. One lady had ordered what I can only imagine was a ginormous birthday cake, and dozens of cupcakes.. What a lucky person the recipient is!
I chose the Vanilla flavoured Chelsea flower show cake, you could also choose from red velvet and double chocolate. I felt a little boring going for Vanilla, but I liked the pink flowers and I'm not a huge Red Velvet fan if I'm honest. It was good, you can't really go wrong with vanilla can you. There was plenty, if not almost a little much pink butter cream icing, with a fondant flower and some little white sprinkles.
Accompanied by a mug of beautiful tea, I took note it was Tea Pigs - lovely stuff!
The Boy went for the Chicago Chocolate Fudge Cake, which was ginormous and he couldn't manage it, so I got to try some too. :-) It was very rich, even by my standards. I think you could could possibly wedge a door open with a slice of cake that size. To wash down his cake The Boy also ordered an Americano which he said was very good.
I think I can safely say my love of cupcakes started when I first tried cupcakes from The Hummingbird Bakery, so it's good to pay a return visit.
