We decided a little mini break just before Christmas would be the perfect way to wind down and end the year. I've never been to Scotland, and Edinburgh has always been on my mental list of places I'd like to go.
Having swotted up on good places to find cupcakes, decent coffee and perhaps some whiskey.  I thought I'd share our experiences with you.

We booked train tickets from Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverly, with a hotel booked very close by on Princes Street.

There was a lovely Christmasy feel to Edinburgh with 'Edinburgh Christmas' the German Christmas markets, ice rink and Ferris wheel on view just out of our window. But I think anytime would be a lovely time to visit Edinburgh.
Beautiful view from Calton Hill.
What we did..
We wandered, a lot, exploring the Castle & Royal Mile area, we also climbed Calton hill where we had a lovely view of the city.
A beautiful day at the castle.
I found lots of lovely independent shops, like Miss Katie Cupcake (perfect name!) full of lovely vintage inspired bits and pieces. To be found at 52 Cockburn St, Old Town, EH1 1PB.
Then taking a stroll on to Broughton Street, you'll find Curiouser & Curiouser and Dragonfly Gifts where you'll find some lovely gifts and books.
We explored coffee shops and tea rooms too, of course! You'll find Artisan Roast situated at 57 Broughton St,  EH1 3RJ. I had a piccolo and I ordered the v60 for the boy as he had not tried it before and as a coffee fan, I thought he should.. It's almost slightly tea like in texture and the flavour really comes through.  I had a little taste and really enjoyed it too.
On my list was also...  Love Crumbs which we popped into but we needed lunch as opposed to cake(!)
So we ended up at Loudon's Bakery which also has lots of lovely looking cakes AND serves lunch. I went for soup served with their lovely handmade bread, and the boy went for pizza served with salad- delicious.
also wanted to visit Cuckoo's Bakery which I'd seen lovely pictures of
on their Instagram & twitter feeds. See my separate blog post
'Cuckoo's Bakery' for some wonderful cupcakes.
Thanks for reading.
I'd done my research before visiting with help from Brian Coffee Spot / Caffeine magazine & Edinburgh Eats
